Phineas and Ferb is a fun animated Disney Channel program beloved by kids and adults alike; and for a variety of reasons.

Phineas and Ferb involves the misadventures of two stepbrothers who devote their summer vacations to the creation of innovative inventions and contraptions, everything from cars to submarines to full-fledged fashion lines. Kids love the cute characters (including Phineas, who comes complete with a quaint triangle-shaped head with a tuft of fire red hair on top) and the boys’ sense of adventure, while adults appreciate the show’s gentle sense of humor, its positive view of nontraditional families (Phineas and Ferb are step-siblings who work and play together in harmony), and the way it encourages creativity in children.

What viewers of any age group may not know about, however, is the long road that lead to the creation and development of the Phineas and Ferb program. Conceptualized by creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, who previously worked together on the popular Nickelodeon series Rocko’s Modern Life, the show was pitched to numerous networks before being accepted at Disney—a full 16 years after its concept was originally conceived.

Povenmire and Marsh created a robust children’s program brimming with humor, music and adventure. Aside from Phineas and Ferb, they introduced fun characters like Candace, the boys’ tattle tale sister; and their pet platypus Perry, who (like most household pets?) leads a mysterious double life as a secret agent.
